Chip hails from the prestigious lacrosse powerhouse of Ward Melville High School on Long Island, where he graduated from in 1986 after earning High School All-American honors. He moved on to play at the University of North Carolina, where he graduated in 1990 after being named to the All-American and All-ACC teams. He then served as an assistant coach at UNC from 1990-1994, helping guide the Tar Heels to the 1991 NCAA Men's Div. I National Championship. In 1994 he co-founded the Great Atlantic Lacrosse Company in Chapel Hill, NC helping it to become the largest mail order lacrosse supplier in the US. From 1996-1998 Chip was the head coach at Chapel Hill High School where he coached the Tigers to North Carolina public school state championship in 1997. In 1998 he accepted a job as the Southeastern Sales Representative for Brine Inc. He then served as the Southeast Regional Sales Manager for Warrior and Brine Lacrosse. In 2019 he left Warrior to take on a new role at Lax.com as their Southeast Regional Team Sales Manager. Chip was one of the founding fathers of the Triangle Area Lacrosse League (TALL) in 1998, and served as the executive director for two years. He is Co-founder of RIVAL Lacrosse Inc. which has established boys and girls youth lacrosse programs in Wake Forest, Cary, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill North Carolina. In January of 2013 Chip took on a new role within the Fusion organization as the Director of TSL-Cannons Travel programs. Currently, he shares in duties as Co-Director of RIVAL Youth Lacrosse. He married Kerry Ellen Byrne in 1999, and they have three girls: Abigail, Elisabeth and Grace. The Mayer family lives in Durham.
